Cascading originates from current-limiting technology.
If limiting breaking/making capacity of a circuit breaker is lower than prospective short-circuit current, it can be installed downstream of a current-limiting circuit breaker so that it can have improved breaking capacity due to current-limiting ability of the upstream circuit breaker.
Cascading technology helps lower cost of downstream switches and accessories.
[Schneider Electric]

This consists of installing an upstream circuit-breaker D1 to help a downstream circuit-breaker D2 to break short-circuit currents greater than its ultimate breaking capacity lcuD2.
This value is marked lcuD2+D1.
Standard IEC 60947-2 recognises cascading between two circuit-breakers.
[Schneider Electric]
